Are you capitalising on your talents to create the life you want?

Everyone has innate talents, but unfortunately most of us have little sense of what they are, and how to develop and leverage them to our advantage.

Instead we spend much of our lives focusing on our weaknesses, often feeling inadequate, and wasting time trying to remedy these shortcomings misguidedly believing we can be competent in just about anything. Consequently, our talents lie dormant.

We gain far more positive outcomes when:

  • we build and capitalise on our talents
  • optimise our potential to enrich the quality of our lives
  • work and fulfil our own goals and aspirations.

The key to success is to take a strengths-based approach to fully understand, develop and leverage our natural talents in our everyday lives.

A 21st Century Strategic Workforce Plan: does your organisation have one?

Strategic workforce planning is a core business process that aligns the People Strategy with the future needs of the business.

A contemporary workforce plan considers the context, the current and future profiles of the workforce, identifies potential challenges and opportunities, ascertains the capabilities and the culture required for the business to thrive, sets the priorities and develops strategies for managing them.

This work enables proactive business decisions.

All too often the focus is on the imminent operational needs of the business – the urgent. Although workplaces collect data on the composition of their workforce, there is little strategic workforce planning, talent management, and creation of opportunities for encore careers for older workers – an unprecedented growing proportion of the workforce.

“The best way to build the best workforce is to focus on the largest talent pool you have” – Mary Dillon

In the 21st Century the prospect of living a long, healthy and productive life is a reality. World-wide the population is ageing; centenarians are growing in numbers, as are Semi-Supercentenarians (those aged and 105-109 years) and Supercentenarians (those age 110 plus).

Reframing and embracing change

The constant in life is change.

Change can be BIG – life altering events that rock your world, or small – the changes we encounter day-to-day. For example, cancelled appointments, urgent tasks that popped up unexpectedly, traffic detours, a child that forgets their school bag, a friend can’t meet you as planned for lunch – the unexpected happens and plans need to be rearranged.

Change, BIG or small is inevitable and unavoidable. We all experience change in our lives which can be physical, environmental, changes in our relationships with our family and friends, and changes in our work and workplace.

Change is the law of life and those who look only to the past and the present are certain to miss the future – John F. Kennedy

Depending on your situation, how the change was initiated – whether you actively instigated the change, or whether the change was someone else’s decision, will influence how you deal with it.

Regardless of the circumstances BIG change can be both daunting and exciting so it’s important to discover ways to roll with it.

Everyone has the potential to achieve

I believe everyone has the potential to achieve their goals and aspirations and truly flourish. It’s the most wonderful thing in the world to inspire people to capitalise on their strengths, apply them to new challenges and see them shine.

Sadly, few of us recognise our own potential, are unsure of how to develop it to our best advantage, and without realising it settle for less than we had hoped for. Often this insight occurs when we make a transition in our life or work. It’s when we take stock of our situation, contemplate the future and question ‘What’s Next?’
